They support a range of unique species such as sand lizards, several species of orchids, birds such as the stonechat and the grayling butterfly. These towering mounds of sand need particular conditions to form on a beach. They need a ready supply of sand, wind blowing onshore and an obstacle (such as driftwood or seaweed) to trap the sand and begin their development. Over time, these small areas of trapped sand begin to provide the conditions for certain vegetation to grow, such as sand couch. Once plants are established, their growth and decomposition change the make up of the soil and different species of plants can grow, such as marram grass. If there are no disturbances, this process will continue and over time sand dunes grow and can host small trees such as willow. This is called sand dune succession (see Figure 1). Threats and responses However, the sand dunes are under threat from human activities such as building coastal defences, developing land adjacent to the dune (e.g. for golf courses), rising sea level Woodland (mature dunes) Dune slack Grey dunes Yellow dunes Fore dunes Embryo dunes Trees (oak, pine, birch) Gorse Aquatic plants Low shrubs (brambles) Marram grass Sea rocket, couch grass Sea Dry sand blown onshore at low tide Sand collects in shelter of rocks/wood water table Sand dune succession (time — up to 400 years) 11 www.hoddereducation.com/wideworld due to climate change and people and animals eroding the dunes. In response to these threats, some conservation organisations have come up with a surprising and very festive plan by using old Christmas trees. By creating a barrier across the sand dunes, Christmas trees help to trap more sand and bind it together, supporting the succession process. One such project is the Fylde Sand Dunes Project run by local wildlife trusts, Fylde Council and Blackpool Council, and located on Lancashire’s coastline in northwest England. To date the project has been a success — 11,000 Christmas Figure 1 Sand dunes and plant succession trees having been placed across sand dunes, which has helped to increase the sand dune habitat by 6 hectares since 2008 and support the introduction of over 400 sand lizards. So next time you have a leftover Christmas tree, consider donating it to be used to protect our valuable sand dune habitats. © Dave McAleavy/Alamy Stock Photo September 2024 Volume 34 Number 1 A-level government and politics The 2024 general election How first-past-the-post delivered Labour’s victory US politics Evaluating the presidential primary season Consensus versus self-interest Global efforts on climate change Exam success Structuring essays for top marks HODDER EDUCATION Magazines also available online A-level business September 2024 Volume 31 Number 1 The K-popwave Applying the product life cycle to K-pop Government policy What do businesses need from the government?
